Q02
The monitoring results show numbers in parentheses (< XX) after Not Detected. What do they mean?
Q03
I would like you to display more details about the areas of monitoring.
Q04
Where can I undertake the voluntary monitoring of agricultural products?
Q01
Who measures the values and how?
A01
In principle, germanium semiconductor detectors are used for the emergency environmental radiation monitoring conducted by the prefectural government. The monitoring is performed at the Fukushima Agricultural Technology Centre by engineering staff of Fukushima Prefecture who have undergone specific training. Simplified analysis devices that were distributed to each area are used for some of the products that are produced in and shipped from limited areas, and where a certain level of radioactive cesium is detected in this simplified test, the product is to be tested with a germanium semiconductor detector.
Q02
The monitoring results show numbers in parentheses (< XX) after Not Detected. What do they mean?
A02
On November 1, 2011, Fukushima Prefecture changed the test result indication “ND” to “Not Detected” (< Lower limit of detection). As with the previous indication, the new indication also means that no radioactive material was detected. It also shows the lower limit of detection (the smallest amount that can be detected) for reference. The lower limit of detection differs from measurement to measurement because it is influenced by the measurement conditions (including time) and measurement sample (its weight, density, volume, and radioactive nuclides that coexist). It does not indicate the actual measured value.
Q03
I would like you to display more details about the areas of monitoring.
A03
The monitoring is conducted in all cities, towns, and villages (cities, towns, and villages before the merger apply to rice) that are similar in terms of climate, geography, production system, and other factors and that share the same distribution route. We will continue to conduct detailed monitoring.
Q04
Where can I undertake the voluntary monitoring of agricultural products?
A04
Voluntary tests of agricultural products and others can be undertaken at the testing institution of each city, town, or village. Please request the specific details from each municipality. For testing institutions outside Fukushima Prefecture, please see the websites of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
